Cigarette butt started fire

Kamloops firefighters acted quickly to extinguish a grass fire they believe was started from a discarded cigarette Wednesday.

The fire was extremely close to homes in the Rose Hill neighbourhood.

Assistant Fire Chief Steve Robinson said the consequences could have been devastating.

Kamloops Fire Rescue are urging smokers to use an ashtray or carry other receptacles to dispose of their cigarettes.

“The Province of B.C. is in a state of emergency due to the wildfire situation,” said Robinson in a press release. “The fire danger risk is rated as extreme in many parts of the province.”

Anyone caught discarding cigarettes improperly is subject to a minimum fine of $500.
