Fortis: Call before you dig

UPDATE: 1 p.m.

FortisBC is reminding the public and contractors to call or click before they dig.

This morning's gas leak that shut down Highway 97 was the result of a gas line hit by a third-party, says Fortis spokesperson Diana Sorace.

FortisBC crews made the necessary repairs after shutting down the impacted section of its distribution system. The highway was closed from approximately 6 a.m. to just before 8 a.m., said Sorace.

"We would like to remind the public that the majority of damages to our system are preventable. Always call or click before you dig to obtain information on the location of buried gas lines and other utilities," she said.

The number to call is 1-800-474-6886, or go to BC One call at http://www.bconecall.ca
