Wine: 2012 Syrah

Winery: Vanessa Vineyard, Similkameen

Why drink it? Syrah for summer? Why not. Welcome this new winery in the Similkameen, with its first vintage. It’s good to expand your BC wine experience to up and coming micro-regions, and yet to be visited wineries. The lineage of this vineyard includes widely known growers and winemaker Howard Soon, and this gold medal winning Syrah has been well crafted. In the glass, aromas of dark plum, cedar and leather. A sip brings a light flavour of pepper, then dark red fruits that lead you to cocoa nibs and toasted oak. A smooth finish lingers just long enough before you must sip again.

Price: $34

Pair with: A full-bodied red with a good tannin structure, this Syrah needs something to nosh on to bring out its character. Braised short ribs, or spiced lamb on the BBQ are classic with this Rhone-style wine. A bison burger with sharp cheddar and a plum-based fruit relish would be great too.

Classic cancon music pairing: Gold in Them Hills, Ron Sexsmith
