42% of Canadians on diets

Almost half of all Canadians say they went on a diet last year.

A recent Insights West poll found 48 per cent of women and 37 per cent of men changed what they ate with the intention of losing weight in the past year.

While 47 per cent of Canadians between the ages of 18 and 34 tried to lose weight by dieting, only 35 per cent of those over 55 tried in the past year.

While nutritional shakes are consumed by 22 per cent of respondents, juice cleanses are attempted by nine per cent.

Additionally, 60 per cent took vitamin supplements in the past year.

In other food-related stats, 53 per cent of Canadians say they consume food past its expiration date. Albertans were the most likely to disregard expiration dates, at 63 per cent, while only 46 per cent of those in Quebec risked expired food.

The poll heard from 1,257 Canadians between May 26 and June 2.
