Lightning sparks wildfires

Lightning-caused fires are keeping the BC Wildfire Service busy.

Firefighters are tending to blazes in the Arrow Fire Zone, near Castlegar, B.C.

"Some fires are highly visible from surrounding communities, none of these fires are immediately threatening communities or structures," said a fire information officer.

Smoke is visible and some people may notice increased air activity.

The Southeast Fire Centre has responded to 34 wildfires that have burned 73 hectares since April 1.

Twenty of these fires were caused by lightning, while the remaining 14 were caused by people.

The BC Wildfire Service is reminding the public to not leave campfires unattended or abandoned as it can easily spark a wildfire.
