Weaver hits Kelowna

Contributed B.C. Green Party

UPDATE: 6:24 p.m.

B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver was met with chants of "go Greens, go" as he exited his campaign bus in Kelowna Sunday afternoon.

Over 100 supporters greeted Weaver at the Best Western Hotel to kick off his two-day visit to the area, according to campaign staff.

“Two weeks ago we were kind of a novelty in the province of British Columbia,” he told the crowd. “In the last week, it’s been remarkable. The media have recognized us, the pundits have recognized us, and the people have recognized us as a force to be reckoned with. We’re in it to win it and anything is possible.”

The Green Party has picked up some momentum this election – traditionally a one-seat party, the Greens are expected to pick up at least a few more this election, with the CBC's poll tracker averaging a three-seat gain to a total of four.

That, Weaver said, was part of the reason for coming to the Okanagan. If the Green Party didn't have a chance of picking up seats in the Valley, he said he wouldn't be in Kelowna.

The recent boost of legitimacy, Weaver said, came from the party's announcement that it wouldn't accept corporate or union donations.

After the afternoon event at the Best Western, Weaver donned a Green Party jersey to attend a Kelowna Rockets playoff game.

Meetings with players in the technology and agricultural sectors are planned for Monday.

“The decision we make today play out in the next generation,” Weaver told the crowd.

Kelowna-Lake Country candidate Alison Shaw called the B.C. Liberal platform an "outdated 1950s business model" as she introduced Weaver at the hotel event.

"The difference between the haves and the have-nots is at an all-time high," she said.
