Lined up for jobs

Such is the need for jobs in the area, people were lining up even before the second annual Vernon job fair began Thursday at the Vernon Lodge.

“When we opened the doors, there was a line up,” said Lee Brinkman, marketing co-ordinator with NexusBC. “It's been great for employers. They're happy. Job seekers are happy. They are all connecting and talking and dropping off resumes.”

Brinkman pointed to the crowded room with more than 35 employers seeking workers.

They included some big name companies in the Valley, including Tolko Industries, Kal Tire, SilverStar Mountain Resort, Sparkling Hill Resort and others.

More than 500 people sought work at last year's fair and more were expected to do so this time.

“We've got a job-seeker lounge, so if you need help with your resume, that's the place to go,” Brinkman said.

Community Futures staff were busy helping people with those resumes.

“We're super busy,” confirmed Leeann Wilhelm, marketing and community liaison with the North Okanagan Community Futures. “Nine times out of ten people struggle finding employment because of their resume.

“The resume is not being tailored or focussed to the employer. They're including details that are not particularly relevent for the job that they are looking for.”

Wilhelm said resource centre staff were helping people “tweak” the details to make the resumes more relevant.

The job fair at the Vernon Lodge is on until 3 p.m.
