Charge after hiker shot

UPDATE: 3:10 p.m.

A man has been charged with attempted murder after shooting a hiker in the face and arm last week on a forest service road in Chilliwack, RCMP reported.

Peter Anthony Kampos, 38, who is believed to be from Ontario is being held in custody for the shooting.

Police are also continuing an investigation into a series of vehicle shootings that spanned a 14-hour period, from Mar. 24th at 1 p.m. through the next day.

The shootings are alleged to have involved a 2009 four-door, blue Dodge Caliber bearing Ontario license plate CAVM918, police said.

So far, police have received 22 reports of commercial trucks believed to have been shot at and one report involving a passenger vehicle.

"We are asking those who may have travelled Highway 37 on Mar. 24, between Kitimat and Terrace, Highway 16 between Terrace and Prince Geoge, as well as Highway 97 from Prince George to 100 Mile House to carefully examine their vehicle for suspicious damage,” said Staff. Sgt. Annie Linteau, RCMP spokesperson. "We are asking anyone who may have been the victim of a suspicious incident allegedly involving Mr. Kampos or the vehicle he was driving to contact their local detachment.”

Investigators of the Chilliwack Serious Crime Unit are looking into what happened in the Ford Mountain Forest Service Road area and Kampos' movements prior to Mar. 24th and his possible motivations.

A man shot in the face for no reason while out for a hike with his dog managed to escape his attacker after a high-speed chase.

New details about the shooting are emerging through a fundraising campaign started for Cam, who was shot in the face and arm March 25 when a shooter boxed in his vehicle on a forest service road in Chilliwack and fired six shots into his car.

"Cam was able to escape, and after being pursued by his attacker at high speed, he came across some military personnel who gave him first aid until a helicopter arrived and airlifted him to hospital," his sister posted on a GoFundMe campaign.

"He was incredibly lucky that he was able to flee, and that his injuries were not life-threatening."

A man has since been arrested and charged in connection with the series of shootings that took place over several hundred kilometres along B.C. roads.

Several truck drivers called 911 over an eight-hour period reporting that someone from a vehicle with Ontario licence plates was shooting at them while driving along Highway 97. Police say reports were received in areas between Houston and 100 Mile House.

"In addition to his physical and emotional injuries, this attack will devastate him financially," said the GoFundMe page.

"Cam had just started a new job and does not yet have access to sick leave or extended health benefits for the physiotherapy and other medical treatments he is likely to need. Moreover, his car was destroyed in the attack and he did not carry comprehensive insurance as it was an older vehicle."

The man's sister says the family is overwhelmed by the support they have received so far and grateful to police and military for their help.
