Taxes up in Coldstream

Coldstream residents face a 2.75 per cent increase in property taxes this year.

The district council approved its 2017 budget during a meeting Monday night, with a strong focus on infrastructure upgrades and operational expenses.

Figures show the district expects to collect $9.95 million in revenue this year and spend $10.1 million.

“For the average residential property (value of $514,798) this increase equates to approximately $58 additional taxes for municipal purposes,” stated an earlier report to council.

"We're taking care of things we needed to," said Mayor Jim Garlick, pointing to parks taken over by Coldstream after the breakup of Greater Vernon Parks and Recreation and efforts being taken to upgrade them.

The mayor also said funds had been set aside for planning the replacement of the old Women's Institute Hall.

"Our pavement management plan is moving ahead. We spend $1 million a year repairing our roads. I think we are doing well."
