Libs refund illegal donations

The BC Liberal party is refunding over $90,000 of contributions made to the party, after reviewing donations made over the last six years.

The RCMP is currently investigating party contributions, stemming from allegations the Liberals accepted illegal donations through lobbyists, but this announcement came as a result of the party's own investigation into it's finances.

The 43 indirect contributions were made by individuals on behalf of an organization, and the name of the individual was then reported. The individuals were then reimbursed by their organization, which is prohibited under the elections act.

In a statement released by the party Friday afternoon, they said the individuals and organizations were unaware their contributions were not permitted.

Additionally, the party says an additional 30 people have told the Liberals abut “clerical errors” that caused inaccurate reporting.

"In each case, the individual was mistakenly listed as the contributor rather than their employer, which had directly contributed, due to data collection errors," the party said in it's statement.

The party's investigation into it's own finances, as well as the RCMP's investigation, continues.
