Amber Heard opens up

Amber Heard has opened up about overcoming prejudices regarding her bisexuality.

The actress was in a relationship with photographer Tasya van Ree from 2008 until 2012, and later became involved with her The Rum Diary co-star Johnny Depp, whom she was married to from February 2015 until they divorced last August.

Amber has never been shy about her sexuality, but has shared that she felt she had become "attached" to the label after she publicly came out at a GLAAD event in 2010.

"Then I realized the gravity of what I had done and why so many people-studio execs, agents, advisors-did not want this coming before my name," The Danish Girl actress said during The Economist's Pride & Prejudice event in New York City on Thursday. "I became attached to a label. I've never seen myself defined by the person I'm with."

The 30-year-old also recalled that being associated with the world "bisexual" also proved problematic when it came to film castings. In particular, agents and producers worried if audiences could "invest" in her romantically if they thought she was "unavailable", but Amber had no desire to keep her sexuality secret.

"I saw myself being in this unique position and having a unique responsibility. So, I bit the bullet," she shared.

Amber, who will soon be seen in Zack Snyder's upcoming superhero film, Justice League, has had a steady stream of work, including films such as Machete Kills, Magic Mike XXL and The Danish Girl. And while she is proud to see more actors expressing their true identity, the blonde star admits that there is a long way to go when it comes to the LGBTQ fight in the entertainment business.

"If every gay man that I know personally in Hollywood came out tomorrow, then this would be a non-issue in a month," she said.
