Jail for carjack rampage

A man convicted of beating a pregnant woman while he stole the truck she was in was sentenced to 10 years in jail Thursday.

Edward Joseph Biwer, 26, was found guilty in September of seven charges, including attempted robbery, use of a firearm, assault causing bodily harm and dangerous driving after he embarked on a drug-fuelled rampage in Surrey in December 2014, less than two months after getting out of jail.

Biwar called the judge a “f—king goof” and continued to swear after he was sentenced.

On Dec. 23, 2014, Biwer attempted to steal a woman's car at gunpoint, but was unsuccessful, so he moved on to a pickup truck sitting in a parking lot off Fraser Highway. A woman, who was six-months pregnant at the time, was in the passenger seat.

As Biwar drove down the highway, he beat on the woman, trying to force her out of the speeding car. Finally, the woman managed to pull on the steering wheel, flipping the truck.

The woman broke her hip in the crash, but the baby was OK.

Not done with his rampage, Biwar stole an SUV that had stopped to assist in the crash. A seven-week-old newborn child sat in the backseat of the SUV, as the panicked father chased after them on foot.

Police soon caught up to the SUV, rescuing the infant, who was unharmed, and arresting Biwar.

Biwar will serve six years and eight months with credit for time served.

“The crimes committed by Biwer have caused great harm and trauma to many innocent victims and their families," Crown Prosecutor Winston Sayson said in a statement. "This sentence is an apt denunciation by the court of such senseless acts."

The 26-year-old has an extensive criminal record dating back to 2012.
