Father burned, airlifted

A Kelowna man who was working on a building that caught fire Wednesday has been identified as a husband and father of two boys.

Braden Kapchinsky was working on townhouse complex under construction near Buckland and Marshall streets when a fire broke out about 7 a.m.

Firefighters rescued Kapchinsy from the top storey of the building.

"A male occupant was found in the top storey with burns and smoke inhalation," the Kelowna Fire Department said in a statement. "(The) patient was rescued through the third floor window by the ladder truck and fire crews.”

He was rushed to Kelowna General Hospital and then airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital, where he is currently being treated in the burn unit.

A family friend set up a Go Fund Me page to “relieve the burden on his family so they can join his side.”

According to the page, the accident has left him in a coma, with burns over half of his body.

Both Worksafe BC and RCMP Forensic Identification Services are investigating the fire.
