Black Cloud, online

For Canada’s 150th birthday this year, Castanet is featuring an Okanagan wine each week, celebrating the bottles of our Valley and the diversity of the Canadian wine industry, including suggested food pairings and Canadian music artist to listen to while enjoying a glass. For current availability, consult the winery.

Wine: “Altostratus” Pinot Noir, 2013

Winery: Black Cloud (virtual, visit blackcloud.ca)

Why drink it? Ah, pinot noir, the heartbreak grape. Tough to get right, growing and harvesting it at the right time requires careful attention. Pick the grapes too soon? A harsh wine is the result. Too late? Can be sweet and jammy, and not in a good way. This one, from a virtual winery without a storefront, is pure Okanagan pinot. Balanced, fruity, earthy, medium bodied, and when you take a sniff, you’re transported to a vineyard on a warm fall day. A bit of black cherry, cedar spice, vanilla, black tea on the taste buds. It’s a good wine to transition from winter to spring.

Price: $30-$35

Pair with: On a very warm day, lightly chill in the fridge for 10 minutes, and enjoy with a platter of roast veggies and a mild goat cheese. On a cold day, grill up some lamb or a mild sausage with a side of your favourite carbs.

Classic cancon music pairing: Shadows in the Moonlight, Anne Murray
