Vernon

NDP to field candidate

The NDP will have a candidate for the Vernon-Monashee riding in May's provincial election. A nomination meeting is set for next month, said an official.

The two Vernon residents vying for the nomination are: Harwinder Sandhu, a nurse, and Barry Dorval, a teacher.

Sandhu is described by the NDP as a “strong advocate for healthcare, seniors' care, public education and affordable childcare.”

Born and raised in India, Sandhu immigrated to Canada in 2001 and has lived in Vernon with her husband and two daughters since 2012.

Dorval is described by the NDP as a “dedicated English teacher at W.L. Seaton Secondary School in Vernon and an advocate for social justice and the environment.”

He has lived in Vernon with his wife since 1999.

The nomination meeting is slated for 1:30 p.m. on March 12 at the Vernon Elks Lodge.

Two people are already in the race including sitting Liberal MLA Eric Foster and the Green Party's Keli Westgate.
