Salsa for a guide dog

Dustin Godfrey

A little girl will be getting a seeing-eye dog soon, thanks to an outpouring of support from the community at a Penticton fundraiser.

Cheysa Goudie wears an eyepatch on one eye to maintain its vision, while she is legally blind in the other eye, due to a severe astigmatism.

"We just can't let her do anything, really, because she doesn't have any distance vision," said Cheysa's mom Wendy Goudie. "So, it's not safe to let her go out to play at the park, or to run around anywhere where there's distance challenges, which is pretty much life."

At the Sunday fundraiser, there was salsa dancing, a silent auction and an eyepatch challenge. People put on a patch and tried various activities, from tossing a bean bag through a hole to colouring.

Getting a service dog for Cheysa will cost about $3,000, which Wendy believes was surpassed at the fundraiser.

"Getting a dog at this age is going to make a big difference because she'll be able to grow up with it and learn how to navigate the situations and participate with that as her assistant," Wendy said.

Blown away by the support the family received, Wendy and John say they’re motivated to do even more for the community.

But for one of the organizers of the event, the support is just a bit of karma.

"Wendy and John and Get Bent (Yoga) have done so much in the community," said Cannery Brewing's Kim Lawton.

"To me, this is just testimony of what they have put into the community and the community coming back to support them."
