Where's the cash?

Vernon's mayor has some concerns that older sports facilities in the Greater Vernon area are being ignored.

While Vernon director Akbal Mund voted in favour Wednesday of adding a $50,000 storage shed to the Greater Vernon Athletics Park at Okanagan College, he told counterparts on the North Okanagan Regional District board that it is time to spend some cash on fixing and maintaining existing recreational facilities in the area.

“I just want to make sure we, as a board, remember we have facilities we haven't put money into – DND (fields), Marshall Field,” said Mund after the meeting.

While Mund conceded $30,000 had been spent on Marshall Field last year, he pointed out it was the first time in a long time.

“It's great to keep adding to new facilities, but if you don't look after the ones that you have, like the Civic Arena, you understand what they look like when you don't look after them.”

Mund also pointed to Creekside Park on Kidston Road where, he said, the lacrosse box had fallen apart.

“These were built a long time ago, and we have barely put any money into them over the years.”

He said older arenas in Kelowna and Kamloops remained in great shape.

“There's a reason the Civic arena looks the way that it does – we didn't put any money into it.”
