Pink shirt day in Penticton

It’s Pink Shirt Day, or national anti-bullying day, and students at École Entre Lacs in Penticton were visited by the RCMP and Penticton Vees to mark the occasion.

During a school-wide assembly, students took a pledge to stand up against bullying, and heard from Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth, who was also in pink.

With children getting access to the internet, cell phones, and messaging apps at a younger and younger age, Wrigglesworth said kids need to be cognisant that their words can still hurt.

“In the past, it would be face to face, you’d know what your words meant and how they hurt somebody.”

“If we can prevent that and help promote communication and support networks, we have a role in society where we are listened to and have a chance to talk about it, that’s great,” he said.

Children also received stickers from the Penticton Vees’ and Cobbs Bread, who were dropping off a cheque for $500, an award for the school winning the Vees school spirit challenge at their anti-bullying game.
