Jail for deadly abduction

A deadly abduction in North Vancouver has landed a man in jail for 14 years.

Tian Yi Eddie Zhang was sentenced Tuesday for manslaughter in the death of a 22-year-old Chinese student.

Zhang was also convicted of unlawful confinement and extortion. He received seven-year concurrent sentences for both crimes.

Crown prosecutor Jeremy Hermanson called it "a significant sentence without being a crushing sentence."

Peng Sun was told in September 2015 there would be a party at a vacant home owned by Zhang's uncle. When he arrived, he was led to the basement where he was tied up and held for a $2.5-million ransom.

He was eventually strangled to death.

"When he was killed, Mr. Sun's hands and feet were bound and his head and face nearly entirely covered in duct tape," says a statement of facts in Zhang's trial.

Court determined Zhang did not take part in the actual killing.
