Mailbox thefts rife

Coldstream has been hit by a series of mailbox thefts which follow a similar to pattern to a series of thefts in Vernon in January.

On Feb. 13th, Canada Post notified North Okanagan RCMP of a series of thefts from community mailboxes in an area spanning Ravine Drive, Upland Drive, Crestview Drive and Kalamalka Road, according to Jocelyn Noseworthy, RCMP spokesperson.

Then, on Feb. 17th, there were four more thefts from mailboxes in the Coldstream area – along Learmouth and Bessette roads.

“In January, there were a series of thefts from community mailboxes in the Vernon area that spanned a week,” said Noseworthy, who added that officers were actively investigating the crimes.

She reminded residents to pick up their mail as soon as possible.

“We are also asking residents to report any suspicious actively around community mailboxes to RCMP.”

In some cases, stolen mail can be used to commit fraud with a criminal cashing a cheque or stealing identification, the officer said.
