Arson charges over wildfire

A 47-year-old Lytton man has been charged with arson causing damage to property in connection to the 2014 Botanie Valley wildfire.

The blaze consumed 1,500 hectares of Crown and Lytton First Nation lands, including one home, a shop, a barn and other outbuildings in the mountains north of Lytton.

Well over 100 firefighters and multiple aircraft and pieces of heavy equipment were needed to bring the fire under control. Several homes were also evacuated.

A media release from the Lytton RCMP says an “extensive investigation” in partnership with BC Wildfire Services since then resulted in charges being laid on Feb. 6. Police are not releasing the accused's name.

The man’s first court appearance is scheduled for April 4th, in Lillooet Provincial Court.
