Tense final home game

The Penticton Vees' final home game of the regular season against the Victoria Grizzlies was a nail-biter.

The team ended with a 2-1 win three-and-a-half minutes into overtime, after they tied it up with the Grizzlies in the second period.

Miller took the puck for an entire lap of the Grizzlies' zone, including a tightrope walk on the blue-line, before scoring in front after a quick back-and-forth pass with Ty Amonte.

The game was payback for the Vees after their first meeting with the Grizzlies on Feb. 4 ended in a similar 2-1 win for Victoria in double-OT.

Speed and skill were on display for the 3,341 in attendance at a game between two of the top teams in the league – both the Vees and the Grizzlies sit at the top of their divisions with 81 points apiece. Just the Chilliwack Chiefs (85 points) and the Wenatchee Wild (90 points) lead the teams.

Tim Friedman kicked the game off for the Grizzlies with a goal halfway through the first period, ending a 170-minute shutout streak for goalie Mat Robson.

It was Grant Cruikshank who, 16 minutes into the second, took the puck from just outside Grizzlies territory, up the right wing and past goalie Matthew Galajda to tie it up. That marked his 30th goal of the season.

The Vees will finish their season on the road, starting on Tuesday against the Warriors in West Kelowna. That will be followed by back-to-back games against the Eagles in Surrey on Thursday and then against the Chiefs in Chilliwack on Friday.
