Buy Local gets boost

The Ministry of Agriculture is receiving a $2-million boost from the government for the Buy Local program.

Buy Local is designed to help support local agrifood companies promote local foods that are grown, raised, harvested and processed in British Columbia.

"The B.C. agricultural sector is world-class and on the forefront of innovation and productivity,” said Minister of Agriculture Norm Letnick. “With stable long-term funding for the Buy Local program, local agrifood companies can continue to thrive and grow and reach larger audiences all over the province."

Buy Local will receive a total of $6 million – $2 million a year – in funding through the government’s three-year fiscal plan.

According to a press release by the Ministry of Agriculture, this funding means local jobs and continued support for food supply security in B.C.

Since 2012, the government funding has helped 200 projects come to fruition and leveraged $29 million in investments through matching funds.

“The Buy Local Program has allowed us to expand our business, improve our promotions, and try new advertising venues that we would not have been able to do otherwise,” said R. Dave Brimacombe, founder of Wayward Distillation House.
