Jail time for banned driver

A Penticton man has been sentenced to 69 days in prison, to be served on the weekends, for repeatedly driving while prohibited.

Kristopher Lapointe received the sentence in Penticton court on Monday, after he was caught behind the wheel while banned from driving four times in 11 months.

Crown counsel requested 110 days in prison and a three year driving ban, while the defence asked for 60 days.

The defense lawyer told the courtroom Lapointe has recently found work after eight months on EI. He is married with one dependant child still relying on his income.

“I apologize for wasting the court’s time… I just want to get these fines paid,” Lapointe said via video conference.

Judge Greg Koturbash opted to hand him a two year driving ban, telling Lapointe if he ends up back in court, “you will serve months in jail.”
