UBC eye on Alt-Right group

UBCO is aware of an Alt-Right group on campus but say they are not affiliated to the university.

“What we know is there is some individuals on campus who are self describing themselves as Alt-Right students,” said Bud Mortenson, director of university relations.

“I haven’t heard them being a white supremacist group," he added.

The group’s Facebook page described them as a group open to all student and faculty regardless of their political beliefs or background.

“Our platform gives Alt-Right students a chance to connect, and voice their concerns about the direction of regressive left is taking our university,” reads the Facebook page.

Mortenson said the university is very aware of the group but doesn't know how many people are involved or who specifically they are. He did confirm they are believed to be UBCO students.

UBCO said they contacted Facebook about the page and requested the UBC logo be removed from their group as it made it appear they were involved.

“It is certainly a concern for the campus community,” he said. “People did reach out wondering why the UBC logo was on the Facebook page.”

Mortenson said the university is keeping an active eye on social media and watching the group.

“It is probably something that may evolve over time as there is more activity, or maybe there wont be, but we will be keeping an eye out for it,” he said.
