Fire roars in Armstrong

UPDATE: 12:00 p.m.

The Armstrong/Spallumcheen fire department spent five hours in a struggle against a roaring fire in a shop up Reservoir Road, above McLeod subdivision, early Monday.

Eighteen members attended the call just after midnight.

"The initial call was it was a minor fire but just responding to the hall we could see it was large," said Fire Chief Ian Cummings. "It was a fully involved structure fire."

Cummings said there were issues accessing the fire which was on a gated property with a long drive.

In the end, only one tender was able to get partway up the drive and then crews used extended hoses to fight the blaze in the 5,000 sq. ft. structure.

"There was a limited water supply so we kept it out of the trees. It is still smouldering and it will smoulder for a couple of days."

Cummings said an investigation into the cause of the fire was just beginning.

A witness says there was a fire in the Armstrong area by a gun range last night.

Crews were called out just after midnight.

It is unclear what caused the fire.

Castanet will update the story as more information becomes available.
