Big White holds int'l contest

Big White Ski Resort held its first annual Intercontinental Cup on Saturday, bringing 135 competitors from Canada, New Zealand and Australia to the mountain.

Those competitors ranged from six-year-olds to professionals, competing head-to-head in a dual-pro format. All racers were able to compete on the same track.

The Big White Ski Club went up against the Aylwin Alpine Academy of New Zealand and the Australian Snowsports Camp program, both of which use Big White for off-season training.

The Big White Ski Club took the cup on Saturday, with their top 15 athletes having an aggregate time of four seconds faster than the Kiwis, who swept the girls under-18 podium.

Officials with Big White say the event also gave kids in the ski club an international experience at home, as well as giving visiting competitors another race to add to their training calendar.

“We had a great turnout and everyone had a lot of fun,” Big White’s director of snow sports Josh Foster said in a news release. “This was the first annual Intercontinental Cup but we’re already looking forward to next season to make it bigger and better.”
