Cold, snow grips BC

With an Arctic ridge of high pressure holding over the Interior of the province, come warnings of frigid temperatures and heavy snowfall.

Environment Canada has issued weather warnings and special weather statements for portions of the province up and down the coast and along the border with Alberta.

Extreme cold temperatures are forecast for the Peace River and Kootenay Park regions.

With wind chills, temperatures in the Peace River area are expected to reach -40 with lows in the Yoho Park and Kootenay Park regions reaching -35. Temperatures are expected to last through the week.

Temperatures are expected to reach -20 C overnight and into tomorrow for the Whistler, North and South Coast, Howe Sound, Fraser Valley and Central Coastal regions.

Significant amounts of snowfall are expected Thursday evening throughout Vancouver Island, Southern coastal regions, the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley.

Amounts have not been estimated.

The Okanagan is also feeling the effects, with temperatures between -6 C and -12 C expected through the weekend. Snowfall is not expected to reach us until Friday.

Periods of snow are forecast for Friday with a 60 per cent chance of flurries over the weekend. Environment Canada has not yet issued any warnings or advisories for the Okanagan or other interior regions of the province.
