Park murder trial date

A date for trial has been set in connection with the 2015 killing of Jason Hardy in Polson Park.

Tal Kalum La Riviere, 29, will face trial for second degree murder in B.C. Supreme Court in Vernon starting on Oct. 16, 2017, according to a court clerk.

La Riviere is the last man standing in the case after similar murder charges against two other males, 15 and 19, were stayed by the Crown earlier this year.

The body of the victim was discovered near the lawn bowling clubhouse on Aug. 26 of last year. Hardy was 42 at the time of his death.

The killing and other incidents in Vernon's main park last year prompted city council to focus on public safety and security in its 2016 budget.

Summer security patrols in Polson Park was one of the service improvements added to the budget. Those patrols are expected to be expanded next year.
