Rockets eat their Wheaties

Dillon Dube was on the ice, but it was Nick Merkley who took centre stage as the launcher of teddy bears Saturday.

It was Dube who had scored the teddy bear goal in each of the last two seasons, but left the deed to his linemate this time.

Fans had to wait until nearly seven minutes had elapsed in the second period before tossing several hundred of the furry critters onto the ice when Merkley buried his seventh of the season.

Merkley added one more on a power-play before the end of the period to put the Rockets up 2-0.

Working with a five-minute power-play to start the third, Jake Kryski added some insurance with his sixth.

Brandon got one back with seven minutes left spoiling Brodan Salmond's shutout bid, but it was as close as they would get.

Salmond turned away 17 shots in a rare start to earn the win.

The Rockets, 16-11-1-0, host the Seattle Thunderbirds Wednesday before hitting the road for their annual pre-Christmas road trip.

The seven-game in 10-day trip begins Friday in Tri-City.
