Crash near Big White

UPDATED: 2:34 p.m.

A man was airlifted to the hospital in serious, but stable, condition, while three others were transported by ambulance after two cars collided on a slippery Big White Road Saturday morning.

The crash, between a van and an SUV, occurred at about 10:30 a.m.

"Quite heavily damaged side impact on one of the vehicles," said Big White Fire Chief Jamie Svendsen. "Crews extricated the gentleman out of the backseat, he was pinned by the side and front seat of the vehicle.

"We had to cut out the back of the vehicle."

Svendsen said the roads were gravelled at the time, but were still slippery.

"People just have to learn that they need to slow down a bit and just drive to the conditions," Svendsen said.

"Somebody must have slid, probably, sideways, and then got hit by the other one."

The condition of the four people involved is unknown at this time.

UPDATED: 12:16 p.m.

Big White Road has been reopened, after a serious crash temporarily closed it Saturday morning.

ORIGINAL: 12:03 p.m.

A serious vehicle crash on Big White Road has closed the mountain road in both directions and prompted the response of a medevac helicopter.

The crash occurred at about 11 a.m. Saturday morning, 18 kilometres east Highway 33, near Big White's Gem Lake chairlift parking lot.

It is unclear how many vehicles or people were involved in the crash, or the condition of those involved.

Saturday marks the first weekend Big White Ski Resort has been operating, as the hill first opened on Wednesday. The area had received six centimetres of snow in the previous 24 hours.

DriveBC does not have an estimated time when the road will reopen.
