Interior has easier road

The path to a BC Hockey League title would appear to be less taxing on teams in the Interior Division than those residing in either the Mainland or Island divisions.

The league announced its new playoff format Friday, one in which Island and Mainland teams would need to win three seven-game series to reach the Fred Page Cup final while the Interior champion may need only two rounds to get there.

All series are best-of-seven.

In the new format, the top four teams in both the Island and Mainland divisions qualify for the playoffs. First will play fourth and second plays third in each division. The winners of those series meet to determine a division champion.

The Island and Mainland champions then meet with the winner taking on the Interior Division champion.

All six teams in the Interior Division will qualify for post season play, unless the fifth place team in the Mainland Division finishes with more points than the sixth place interior team. In that case, the mainland team would crossover to become the number 6 interior seed.

The top two teams receive a bye in the opening round. While they rest, the third place team plays number 6 while numbers 4 and 5 square off.

The division winner will then face the lowest remaining seed with the other team remaining from round 1 going against the second place finisher.

Those two winners then meet to decide a division champion.

The BCHL regular season concludes Sunday, Feb. 26.
