Ready for a job change

It’s time for a change, according to Canadians.

While most of us are satisfied with our current careers overall, two-thirds are interested in making a significant change in jobs – whether that is pushing for a promotion, a new employer, or a new career entirely.

An Angus Reid survey of more than 4,500 Canadian adults reveals they believe there is significant room for improvement in their employment situation.

Most Canadians express satisfaction with their careers, but some are more satisfied than others. When asked about their current employment situation overall, 74 per cent say they are satisfied; although most leave room for improvement.

Only one in five say they are very satisfied.

Satisfaction with a career is also higher among older workers than it is among younger ones.

Those who are happy with their current employment had two things in common, pay and benefits. Nearly 73 per cent of workers from households that earn $100,000 or more per year report satisfaction with their compensation.

Those who work in managerial or executive positions, skilled trades, and office and administrative jobs are more likely to feel good about their employment situations. Those who work in sales and service, the knowledge and creative sectors, and as unskilled labour are less satisfied.

Workers aged 55 and older are mostly uninterested in altering their career path, while nearly 73 per cent of workers under age 35 would be interested in switching things up.

Risk does factor in with Canadians who are considering making a career change. Almost 58 per cent believe they are not the type to take a risk with their job. Many others feel they are not qualified for the jobs they would like while others don’t know how to make it happen.
