UPDATE: 7:55 P.M.

The fire appears to have been extinguished, and occupants have reportedly been transported to hospital.

The highway was originally opened up northbound, but is now open in both directions.

ORIGINAL: 7:25 P.M.

A crash has left a vehicle on fire along Highway 97 between Peachland and Antlers Beach.

Details are sparse at this time, but Abraham Safan, whose mother is at the scene, said the occupants of the vehicle were unable to get out at first.

Another witness has since told Castanet that people were able to get out.

A witness says the car had flipped over along the highway. He said emergency crews are on scene, though ambulances have left to the hospital.

Several people have said the highway is closed in both directions and that traffic has backed up significantly.

Castanet will update as more information becomes available.
