One man, two car chases

A person led Kamloops RCMP on two car chases and one on foot after officers noted mismatched licence plates on his car.

Officers noticed the car in the 300 block of Tranquille Road at 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, and the driver refused to stop for the police after the sirens were turned on.

Police followed the car over the Overlander Bridge, but ceased their efforts as it approached the downtown core, noting that the driver wasn't going to follow direction and posed a safety concern.

Police later located the car on Highway 1 at the Summit Drive Exit, where the car had stopped in rush hour congestion.

The driver fled the scene again, travelling down the Summit Drive exit toward Sahali business area.

The driver crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Summit Drive and Arrowstone Drive, where the suspect fled on foot.

Kamloops Fire and BC Ambulance attended and treated the occupants of the other car for minor injuries, and they were subsequently transported to Royal Inland Hospital for further evaluation.

With the assistance of a police dog, officers apprehended the suspect without incident.

An 18-year-old male resident of Kamloops is in custody.

The investigation is ongoing, and the RCMP expect to recommend charges of flight from police, prohibited driving, no insurance and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.
