Group tackles sad mess

Terrance Michael Landon has been missing since 2013.

His truck and trailer remain on Crown land near James Lake – and both have been vandalized over the years.

Now a group that's gaining attention for its back country cleanup projects is going to tackle the mess at a campsite near James Lake.

Kane Blake with Okanagan Forest Task Force says the group has just received non-profit charity status and is preparing for their third cleanup since the group started at the end of August.

“We are planning on cleaning up what’s left from the sad disappearance of Terrance Michael Landon,” said Blake. “The truck has been shot at and the trailer has been trashed and ripped apart. We are doing this clean up with sadness in our hearts and him in our thoughts.”

Landon had been living in a tent trailer for several months and was building a small cabin in the woods. The last known contact with Landon was on Dec. 26, 2013, when a friend recently went to check on him. They found his vehicle and trailer there but could not locate him.

The cleanup will take place Nov. 5 at 9 a.m. Those interested in volunteering are asked to meet at James Lake, where there will be several vehicles lining the road to indicate where the volunteers have to go.

“We also have a couple other places in the area that we will be trying to clean up as well that have been the scene of illegal dumping,” Blake said. “We are always looking for more people who are not afraid to get their hands dirty and come help.”

He says the group has had full support of the Regional Waste Reduction Office, which offers bins and supplies for cleanups.

This will be the last cleanup for the group before the winter. They will re-start their initiative in the spring.
