Lock it or lose

Salmon Arm RCMP are reminding people not to leave valuables in vehicles.

The Shuswap community has experienced a number of thefts from vehicles recently.

Staff Sgt. Scott West said those responsible have been entering unlocked vehicles, smashing windows and prying locks or door handles to get into vehicles. In most of the cases in October, vehicle owners have left purses or wallets visible in their vehicles.

“Police are urging residents to make sure they remove their valuables from vehicles, especially purses, wallets and phones prior to leaving them, even if it is for a short time. Also, avoid trying to hide your belongings in the vehicles, as thieves are known to watch from a distance to determine if you are hiding valuables as you leave,” said West.

West said theft from vehicles within the city limits are “occurring from dusk to dawn in parking lots and on residential streets.”

People are being encouraged to remove valuables from vehicles or carry the items with you when you leave your vehicle.

People should also report suspicious person lurking around parking lots and suspicious people in neighbourhoods at night.
