School danger over

UPDATE: 4 p.m.

Kelowna RCMP report the "person of interest" sought in connection with sightings of a suspicious man at several local schools has come forward.

Police have positively identified the man after speaking with him and say any risk to the public is now reduced.

“RCMP strongly believe that any potential risk has been reduced, even eliminated thanks to the conversation police were able to have with the man,” Const. Jesse O’Donaghey said in a press release.

"The discussion has provided us with clarity into the teen’s intentions, which has satisfied investigators that they were not criminal in nature.”

UPDATE: 11:55 a.m.

Police are still searching for a man who visited several Kelowna high schools in search of a student under "suspicious circumstances."

Castanet News now has surveillance video that shows the man more clearly.

Kelowna RCMP are looking for your help identifying a person of interest in an ongoing investigation into a possible school creeper.

On Oct. 20 at 9:17 a.m., Kelowna RCMP received a report of “suspicious circumstances,” where an unknown man associated to a white or beige coloured Mercedes four-door sedan, reportedly attended multiple schools in the Kelowna area.

“RCMP have spoken with students and staff and believe that the man was searching for a student,” said Const. Jesse O’Donaghey.

“At this time, it is unclear what the man’s intentions were. However, RCMP and officials with the Central Okanagan School District are taking the matter seriously.”

Police are now releasing still images obtained from video surveillance footage, which they hope will aid in identifying the person of interest or his vehicle.

The man is described as;

  • Caucasian male;
  • 18 to 21 years old;
  • 5-foot-10;
  • 190 pounds;
  • Short brown hair;
  • Facial stubble;
  • Wearing blue jeans, a black hoodie, black shoes and a camouflage baseball cap
