Thinking inside the box

Hundreds of people interested in living in a shipping container milled through the Honomobo open house in Kelowna Saturday.

These aren't your regular shipping containers though.

Honomobo is a company that builds easily-movable homes inside storage containers, complete with all the creature comforts of a traditional home.

The company held an open house on Cadder Avenue Saturday, where one of the homes sits in the backyard of the company's owner, Devon Siebenga.

Siebenga has been renting out the unit on Airbnb throughout the summer, and says his guests have loved it.

The 528 square foot home comes with one bedroom, one bathroom, a kitchen, living room and full laundry services.

Containers range in size and price, from a 207 square foot studio for under $50,000 to a 1,380 square foot, two floor, three bedroom for over $200,000.

Honomobo just launched in the spring and has built homes in Edmonton and Kelowna with more on the way for customers in Seattle and southern California.

One of their largest units, a three bedroom, is being built for a property just north of Kelowna in the next couple months.

In a city like Kelowna, where rental vacancies are extremely low, out-of-the-box, or in this case, in-the-box, solutions to housing are needed.
