Meeting with new chief

New Penticton Indian Band Chief Chad Eneas met with community members, Friday, to talk about working as a team together and the challenges that lie ahead.

"This isn't just about me," said Eneas a former professional bull rider. "The people in our community are probably the most precious resource that we have."

Eneas will serve as chief for at least four years, after winning the election with 179 votes. That was followed by two term Chief Jonathan Kruger at 124 votes and community member Joe Jack at 27 votes.

The new chief assumed duties immediately and will sit at the table for the next regularly scheduled chief and council meeting on Nov. 1. Once council elections are finished, the new leadership will convene to sign their commitment and the oath of office.

Friday's meeting began with Eneas joining others in drumming and a song, followed by a prayer.

He initially told those gathered of all ages that they have always found their way forward by looking at history and that the way they do things is different in their community.

"I really want to say we recognize those people who aren't in front of a camera, the teachers and health staff," he said.

Eneas also focused on the importance of continuing to build strategic partnerships and ensuring that women in the community feel safe.

Looking around the room at the many women in attendance, he told them he wanted to make sure they felt safe and protected and that there shouldn't be any fear in the community.

On the topic of more collaboration generating transparency and inclusion, he talked about formalizing councils for elders, men, women and youth.

As a chief, he explained, Kruger was good to him and he hopes to continue the brotherly relationship.

He not only praised the chief, he also gave credit to the current council and the work they have done

Many said they were pleased to see him place family and women first, which he showed by holding his wife's hand through much of the meeting.

The nominations for council are set to take place on Oct. 26.
