B.C.'s Independent Investigations Office is looking into a fatal confrontation between police and an agitated break-in suspect.

RCMP received several calls about a man trying to break into homes in Coquitlam Wednesday night.

The IIO says officers entered a home to find a "severely injured and bleeding" man with possible life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was Tasered when efforts to "de-escalate the situation" failed.

The stun gun appeared to have no effect.

"Ultimately, there was a physical confrontation between the male and police. Officers managed to take the male into custody without further incident," an IIO statement reads.

But, the man went into medical distress and was pronounced dead shortly before midnight.

The IIO will determine if police actions lead to the man's death.
