Highway maples saved

The City of Kelowna is relocating five large maple trees that have called the corner of Highway 97 and Sexsmith Road home for years.

The trees, which sit behind the Welcome to Kelowna sign at the north end of town, are being moved to make room for the highway expansion in the area.

Rather than destroying the large trees, the city is moving them to Rutland Centennial Park.

“This will provide additional shade for park users and add to the aesthetic value of the park,” said Tom Wilson, communications supervisor for the the City of Kelowna.

The trees will be uprooted on Monday and replanted by Oct 28.

The city does not expect the removal of the trees to cause any traffic disruptions on the highway.
