Penticton

First meeting at the top spot

The Penticton and District Community Arts Council's new executive director says she's expecting to see a lot of new faces at the organization's upcoming annual general meeting.

The AGM, which will take place on Monday, will be Vaelei Walkden-Brown's first as executive director after she took on the role last month after Lynn Allin took the helm of the the Downtown Penticton Association.

One of the major parts of the agenda is the potential addition of six new board members, whose candidacy will be voted on at the meeting. If all six are appointed, it would bring the board to 15 members from nine.

"I think that alone is an indication that people are pretty excited about what we're doing," she said. "It just seems like a sort of faith indicator, I guess, that people really want to be involved in what's happening."

She said the council never intended to bring up the number of directors on the board, but said the nominations kept coming in and those currently on the board all expressed interest in staying in place.

The nominees each have unique backgrounds from one another, which Walkden-Brown said would add to the board's versatility if they were elected.

The nominees, whom Walkden-Brown didn't name, ranged from an architect to a graphic designer to a musician and a photographer.

Also on the bill will be looking forward to next September, when the PDCAC hopes to hold a new arts festival, called the State of the Arts Penticton.

The organization had attempted to get the event going this year, but were unable to get it organized in time.

Walkden-Brown added that she expects to see some new faces in the meeting, whether new members or old members that hadn't been to the meetings before.

"I think we're going to have a really big turnout," she said. "Last year, it was, I think, long-term members, but this year I anticipate having a lot of new faces."

Walkden-Brown said she feels good going into her first AGM as executive director, which she said was made easier with support from the board members.

"I think the board has prepared me quite well," she said.
