Hard work begins at UBCM

The tough work is getting underway at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities convention in Victoria as nearly two-thousand delegates begin debate on a number of key issues vital to local governments.

Almost 200 resolutions are up for discussion between now and the conference close on Friday.

Priority issues highest on the agenda include the downloading of DNA analysis costs, as well as regulations governing a developing marijuana industry.

The Resort Municipality of Sun Peaks has proposed a resolution on taxation of short-term Airbnb-style rentals, while issues of homelessness and affordable housing are also slated.

Debate on those so-called Section A resolutions comes in advance of Premier Christy Clark's address to delegates in the afternoon.

Her speech is followed by several provincial panels, including one on responsible resource development, which is timely in the wake of federal government approval of the Pacific NorthWest LNG project on B.C.'s north coast.
