Students get history lesson

Salmon Arm students will get a lesson in First Nations history and culture this week.

A truth and reconciliation acknowledgement ceremony will be held at the Jackson Campus of Salmon Arm Secondary School Friday at 11 a.m.

The ceremony will include a welcome by Chief Judy Wilson of the Neskonlith Band and drum songs by students.

There will be a short video explaining Orange Shirt Day and truth and reconciliation elder Ethel Thomas will share a residential school story.

Friday is Orange Shirt Day, which is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake in the spring of 2013.

It grew out of Phyllis Webstad's story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.

A cultural activity will be held before closing remarks from Chief Wayne Christian of the Splatsin Nation and district superintendent Glenn Borthislte.
