Top cop suddenly retires

Kelowna's top cop has suddenly retired.

RCMP Supt. Nick Romanchuk has been off since early September and the force's senior media relations officer now says "he decided to retire from the RCMP."

It was made official on Monday, with a memo reportedly sent to those in the detachment.

"An interim Regional Detachment Commander, Insp. Brent Mundle, remains in place," said Staff Sgt. Rob Vermeulen in an email.

"We will be working with our local government partners on choosing the next detachment commander for Kelowna regional detachment."

Romanchuk became Kelowna's superintendent in 2013.

He was previously OIC of the Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment and replaced Bill McKinnon, who stepped down earlier that year.

Romanchuk has 25 years of service with the RCMP, joining the RCMP in 1991.

He has served in Lillooet, Kamloops, the Southeast District Customs & Excise Section, Nakusp, Lumby, Trail, Kootenay Boundary, and Kelowna.
