School starts on a high note

A Vancouver Island mom was looking for a bit more of a buzz to celebrate back to school.

Police in Saanich pulled over a woman for speeding in a school zone Tuesday morning who said she smoked a joint with other moms before getting behind the wheel.

Sgt. John Price said he was conducting speed enforcement in the Spectrum-Marigold school zone when the car came speeding along the roadway.

Price said as soon as the car was stopped by police “it was pretty evident” those in the car had smoked a joint prior to being pulled over.

“She did admit to smoking a joint and tried to excuse it away by saying her and some of the other moms this morning had a celebratory joint, celebrating that the kids were back in school,” said Price, adding the mom was admonished for smoking pot and then driving through school zones, but a drug recognition expert deemed that she was not impaired enough to warrant charges.
