Guilty pleas on drug imports

A Mexican man's sentencing has been pushed back to late October, after pleading guilty in a case of attempted drug importations.

Alexis Garcia Palomino pleaded guilty to two counts of importing a controlled substance – including one count for heroin and one count for methamphetamine.

He also pleaded guilty to attempting to cross the border without reporting to a customs officer.

The court heard that Garcia Palomino had attempted to enter the country near Osoyoos on March 17 with a backpack full of drugs. The Crown was seeking four years of jail time.

However, defence lawyer Robert Maxwell asked for sentencing to be pushed back, while the courts awaited a pre-sentencing report.

Maxwell noted that he would be seeking something other than four years of jail time, but would not give details until the case went to sentencing.

Garcia Palomino, who appeared in court over video and spoke through a translator, apparently wrote a letter to the Mexican Embassy to detail why he was compelled to import the drugs by a cartel.

That letter was then forwarded to Maxwell, who said he would forward the letter to the federal Crown lawyer on the case.

It is not known at this time how much of the drugs was in Garcia Palomino's backpack, but Maxwell suggested it was a considerable amount.

Garcia Palomino is set to appear back in court for Oct. 26 at 10:30 a.m.
