Fire destroys vacant home

Fire destroyed a vacant home in Rutland overnight.

Kelowna firefighters responded to the 600 block of Mugford Road at 2:30 a.m. to find the structure fully engulfed in flames.

The abandoned home was a total loss.

No one was inside the house at the time.

Arriving crews found power lines down in the driveway, blocking their access to the building. They fought the fire from a safe distance until Fortis power crews arrived to de-energize the lines.

The fire has been deemed suspicious, and an investigation has begun, Platoon Capt. Steve Wallace said in a press release issued this morning.

Firefighters remain on scene, mopping up and checking for hot spots.

Kelowna Fire Department responded with 16 firefighters, three engines, a rescue truck and command vehicle. Fortis power and gas crews and RCMP were also on scene.
