Pot advocates to hold rally

A medical marijuana rally is set to take place in Penticton early next month.

The event, to be held at 2 p.m., Sept. 4 at Gyro Park, is about tolerance, information and acceptance, according to organizers.

Jo Scofield said the event is intended to promote a provincial medical marijuana program to supplement the federal program currently in place.

"The federal program right now is aimed at patients with more severe needs," she said. "Not everyone is able to access the federal program."

She said people are welcome to bring their own information on either side of the debate, but added that there will be people on site fact-checking information brought in by third parties.

The rally comes as Penticton city hall mulls over potential regulations on the medical marijuana industry it could undertake on its own.

City staffers were given 60 days to report back to council after it voted in favour of looking at regulations the city could take.

That follows suit as other cities, including Vancouver, have taken it upon themselves to regulate storefront dispensaries.
